The Return of The Jedi - Is Star Wars Back On Track?

A lot of people have a lot to say about Star Wars and the array of new content that fans have been blessed with since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012. Managing a franchise the size of Star Wars is not an easy task and when your fanbase includes pretty much the whole world and people of all ages, as the old adage goes, you can never please all of the people all of the time.

Announcements and then cancellations of films such as Bobba Fett, Rogue Squadron and other untitled films and TV series had led some fans to wonder on the direction of the franchise. However there has been some fantastic content too - for all ages and tastes - especially on the TV side, such as The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte.

At Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo earlier this month there were a lot of new announcements, sneak peeks and updates on what Star Wars fans can expect in terms of films and TV shows for the next few years. To say that fans were excited is an understatement and if changing the narrative on the Star Wars pipeline to a more positive one was the objective then the event more than met this.

Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Star Wars fans over the next few years.

First up, and with the first 3 episodes just released on Disney+, is the second, and final, season of Andor. With the two seasons showcasing events leading up to the Rogue One movie, the first season was hailed as a real return to the grittiness of Star Wars. Diego Luna said as part of the panel that fans should watch Rogue One after Andor Season 2 as he believes they will see it as a "different film." Which certainly stokes interest in the events of this upcoming season.

The new season will also be "more ambitious" than the first and will feature 140 sets across seven stages, two backlots, 700 costumes for principals, 150 creatures, 30 droids, and 4,100 VFX shots. So it looks like we’re going to be visiting quite a few planets across the 12 episodes.

Reactions to the first 3 episodes have been off the charts with many reviewers describing it as some of the best Star Wars ever made.

Up next and bookending with Andor at the opposite end of the original trilogy is Ahsoka Season 2, and it was announced that Hayden Christensen will be reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker. With a few appearances in new Star Wars projects under his belt, it's nice to see Hayden getting the fan love he didn’t receive the first time around.

It was also revealed that Admiral Ackbar will have a big part to play and will face off against Grand Admiral Thrawn in some, hopefully epic, battles. Production on Ahsoka season 2 begins imminently with no release window yet announced.

Much anticipated, The Mandalorian & Grogu is headed to theaters on May 22, 2026. Being the first Star Wars film to be released on the big screen since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker the expectations are high. Especially based on the fantastic reception of The Mandalorian TV show.

Sigorney Weaver has joined the cast, with little known about her character apart from that she is one of the people working to protect the New Republic. Based in the Outer Rim where vestiges of the Empire remain its likely she will need someone like the Mandalorian and his faithful companion to help her in her mission.

Another big announcement was that of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, a new animated series headed to Disney+ sometime in 2026 that will follow Sam Witwer's Darth Maul after the events of the final season of The Clone Wars. The show will see Maul "plotting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire."

Probably THE biggest announcement though was that of Star Wars: Starfighter with Ryan Gosling confirmed as starring in this film that takes place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Not much more about the film was shared besides that Gosling will be playing a brand-new character,

Directed by Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy, Starfighter will be a new standalone, live-action film and production will be starting this fall for a May 28, 2027 release. The film is set after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, placing it further down the Star Wars timeline than any movie or series to date.

So what do you think? Are things looking brighter in a galaxy far, far away? However you feel about the upcoming slate the good news is there’s plenty of new content coming for this iconic franchise over the next few years
