Successful licensing is about making sure that the right products are on the right shelves (real or virtual) at the right time. And that’s why, traditionally, licensing programs are years in the making.
However, every so often, a film, musician or TV show hits in a way that wasn’t expected, or finds a passionate audience more quickly than planned for. A great recent example of this is Netflix’s summer smash animated movie - KPop Demon Hunters. It launched on the service at the end of June with no major promotional push, but is now Netflix’s most viewed animated movie ever, capturing the attention of kids, and adults, around the world and with a hit soundtrack to boot. The fictional girl band from the movie, HUNTR/X, has claimed No. 1 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart with their song “Golden” and it has also spent three nonconsecutive weeks at the top of both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. US Charts. The soundtrack is also the highest charting soundtrack of 2025 on Billboards 200. No surprise then that the movie is being called 'Netflix's Frozen'.
This is a huge feat for not only KPop but for an IP that is truly original, not based on any previous work. And that’s probably why it caught everyone by surprise. With a summer filled with huge movie franchises - Jurassic World, How To Train Your Dragon, Marvel, Superman and Lilo & Stitch, with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, few would have placed their bets on an animated KPop movie that had flown, pretty much completely, under the radar.
Off the back of this success a lot of rumours have surfaced around how Netflix will follow it up - from more movies, a stage musical and short form content to bridge the gap.
In terms of licensing there’s been a quick turn around to make products available on the official Netflix Shop as well as Hot Topic and Amazon. Print on demand is the most logical way to make products available quickly to meet demand, and with the number of categories increasing all the time, a pretty robust, if basic, range of products can be built very quickly.
