Jamie Gillan, nicknamed “The Scottish Hammer” for his powerful kicking ability, is a Scottish punter for the New York Giants. Born in Arbroath, Scotland, Gillan first played American football in 2013 after moving to Leonardtown, Maryland, where his father was stationed as a member of the Royal Air Force. Before transitioning to American football, Gillan played rugby, where he developed his natural kicking skills. Following high school, he earned a scholarship to play college football at Arkansas–Pine Bluff (HBCU). After going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, Gillan signed with the Cleveland Browns and quickly made his mark. He was named the team's starting punter after an impressive preseason. In Week 2 of the 2019 season, Gillan punted six times, with five punts landing inside the 20-yard line, helping the Browns to a 23–3 win over the New York Jets. His performance earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Later that September, after 11 punts inside the 20 and allowing only 19 punt return yards, he was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month. Gillan finished his rookie season with 63 punts for 2,913 yards, including 28 punts downed inside the 20-yard line, earning a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie team. On February 7, 2022, the New York Giants signed Gillan. He played a crucial role for the Giants' special teams in 2022, living up to his nickname with consistently strong performances. In March 2023, Gillan secured an additional two-year contract with the Giants, solidifying his role as a key member of the team. In 2024, Gillan continued to be an essential part of the Giants’ special teams unit, known for his powerful leg and precision punting, which have earned him a reputation as one of the NFL's most reliable punters.
