Chris Bassitt

Athletes

Chris Bassitt is a starting pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays. He made his MLB debut with the Chicago White Sox in 2014 after being drafted by them in the 16th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Before his professional career, Bassitt was a standout athlete in both basketball and baseball at Genoa Area High School and the University of Akron. In 2020, Bassitt was in contention for the Cy Young Award, finishing the regular season with the fourth-lowest ERA in the American League. However, in 2021, he suffered a serious injury when a line drive struck him in the face, leading to a facial fracture. Demonstrating his resilience and leadership, Bassitt made an incredible recovery and returned to the mound before the end of the 2021 season. Following the 2021 season, Bassitt was traded to the New York Mets, where he made his debut on April 9, 2022, against the Washington Nationals. In his first start as a Met, he threw 66 of 93 pitches for strikes and became only the second pitcher in Mets history to throw at least six scoreless innings with eight or more strikeouts in his debut. In December 2022, Bassitt signed a three-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, marking the club's biggest signing of the offseason. He quickly became a key component of the Blue Jays' starting rotation. During the 2023 season, with the Blue Jays' rotation struggling, Bassitt emerged as a beacon of hope. In April, he allowed just two home runs and 10 earned runs over 29 2/3 innings, holding batters to a .529 OPS while striking out 28 and walking 16. The Blue Jays won three of the five games Bassitt started that month. He continued his strong performance in May, highlighted by a complete game shutout against the Atlanta Braves on May 12, the first shutout by a Blue Jays starter through nine innings since 2015. On June 2, Bassitt faced his former team, the Mets, and his performance helped snap their three-game winning streak. Shortly after, he rushed back to Toronto to welcome the birth of his second child. Later that year Bassitt was nominated for the All-MLB Team. In 2024, Bassitt surpassed 1,000 career innings pitched. Through 14 starts in 2025, Bassitt has posted a 3.70 ERA with 78 strikeouts, holding opponents to a .267 batting average. His first two starts in June were impressive, going 7 innings and earning two wins. Career Highlights & Awards: 1x All-Star (2021)
